Grounds for Change
The name of this coffee roasting company says it all! They are a family owned company that roasts 100% Organic, Fair Trade, small batches of coffee each day to make sure that their customers receive the freshest best tasting coffee as possible. I really appreciated the fact that the coffee is certified Organic by a stringent processor that is enforced by the Washington State Department of Agriculture, and their coffee beans are Shade Grown. They offset 100% of their non-renewable energy consumption (CO2’s), such as shipping, coffee roasting, and transporting; with the help of Puget Sound Energy’s Green Power Company. These green offset purchases help to bring essential financing to wind farms and solar power projects in the Pacific Northwest and this energy generated from these projects are ultimately fed into the Northwest power grid. Additionally, they purchase renewable electricity generated by solar, wind and biomass which they feel is critical to the long term success of their company and for our planet.
Grounds for Change are a company dedicated to creating change, and they do just that with every coffee purchase through Fair Trade purchasing. The countries in which they buy their coffee beans from receive a higher price than the regular going rate for certified coffee, and that money goes to supporting local women’s programs, such as domestic violence intervention and obtaining small business loans.
Here is additional information to take note of about Grounds for Change:
- They compost all of our organic waste including coffee grounds, coffee filters and food scraps.
- They purchase and print on paper made from 100% recycled content and recycle all office paper, toner cartridges, cardboard, glass, metal and plastic.
- They recycle all of our empty burlap coffee bags by donating them to local organic farmers for weed suppression and the Washington State Coastal Clean-up Day as tough, biodegradable waste removal bags.
- They also recycle all of their coffee chaff, the organic by-product of the roasting process, by giving it to local, organic farmers to be used as a nitrogen-rich soil amendment.
- And recycle all inbound freight pallets by donating them to a local business that rebuilds them for reuse.
- They donate well over 1% of our gross annual sales to social and environmental organizations as part of our membership with 1% For The Planet.
- They promote positive change by working closely with sustainable organizations like the Northwest Shade Coffee Campaign, Save Our Wild Salmon, Global Partnerships, Cafe Femenino Foundation and many other local and national non-profits.
Once again, I really loved all their coffees. Some of the coffees they offer are:
- Colombia “Anzeas”, medium dark roast, with notes of cinnamon & toast
- Bolivia “Los Yungas”, medium roast, with notes of caramel & almond
- Decaf (Swiss Water Process) Peru “Café Femenino”, dark roast, grown by women, with a chocolate aroma!
